What are clear braces?
One of the many esthetic solutions for braces. Clear braces came into light about 15 years ago, and have been developing ever since. In many ways, these are kind of like the traditional metallic braces, but in others, they are also very different.
How are clear braces like metal braces?
They have the same mode of action. Both systems consist of brackets that are attached to the outer surface of the teeth. A wire crosses over those brackets, and is fixed to them through round elastic bands (yes the colorful ones that the orthodontist changes every visit).
That setup causes the wire to pull on the teeth, moving them to the required location.
How are they different?
While they work the same way, they certainly look very different. The appearance is where clear braces really make a difference. Instead of the metallic brackets, wires and colorful elastics, clear brackets are just that .. Clear. They are made of a transparent ceramic material, making them all but invisible. The wire too is different. It is made of the same material, but coated with a white covering, further masking its metallic nature. Finally, the elastics are white or transparent. The whole setting is visually very acceptable compared to their metallic counterparts.
