Who needs braces?
Braces (aka orthodontics) is the art and science of straightening teeth. So if you suffer from a problem with your teeth’s arrangement, then braces probably is the answer for you. These problems include:
-
Crowding:
When the teeth are too large or the jaw is too small, the teeth find nowhere to go, and their positions are abnormal. This is known as a crowded jaw.
-
Spacing:
The opposite of crowding. When the teeth are too small or the jaw too large, spaces appear between the teeth, which could be just as ugly – if not more – as crowded teeth.
-
Overbite:
Normally, the upper front teeth cover about ½ the lower teeth when you bite down. An overbite means your upper teeth are too long, so they cover a larger area of the front surface of the lower teeth.
-
Underbite:
Also known as an open bite. As the name suggests, it is the opposite of an overbite. This means the upper front teeth are far away from the lower teeth, even when you’re back teeth are touching.
-
Jaw size mismatch:
When your upper jaw is too large or the lower jaw is too small, or vice versa. This problem often needs surgery beside braces for a complete fix.
What are the types of braces available?
-
Traditional metallic braces:
Still considered the gold standard of orthodontic treatment. The system is composed of metallic brackets, wires and colorful round elastics that are constantly changed. This assembly pulls the teeth to the desired position.
-
Clear braces:
This system use the same principles as metallic braces, but it looks better. The brackets are made of a clear ceramic material, the wire is coated with a white coating, and the elastics are white or transparent.
-
Lingual braces:
Taking esthetics to a new level. This type of braces is attached to the inner surface of the teeth. Granted the braces irritate the tongue and palate, but you can’t argue with the highly improved appearance.
-
Invisalign:
One of the greatest marvels of modern orthodontics. Invisalign replaced the brackets, wires and elastics with transparent, plastic molds known as aligners. These fit the outer surface of the teeth, and apply pressure so that they move the teeth.
