What is Smile Direct Club?
Smile Direct Club is a service that offers you the ability to straighten your teeth while sitting at home. Basically, how they work is that they initially send you a kit to take an impression of your current jaw structure by post, once you’re done with that you mail it back to them. After that, you routinely receive plastic fittings for your teeth and the treatment could last anywhere between 12 months to 36 months.
In terms of treatment costs, Smile Direct Club offers two options, the first one being a full cash payment and the other being an installment plan lasting 24 months.
Sounds good so far? It does, however, there are just a few things smile direct couldn’t provide that a proper Orthodontic treatment could, it includes properly diagnosing one’s jaw problem and also looking for other problems. Let’s look into the benefits you’re missing out by not choosing Invisalign over Smile Direct Club.
Treatment
Invisalign treats your teeth better and faster than Smile Direct. Why? Because when you’re getting Invisalign, the orthodontist puts small attachments on to your teeth that prevent the teeth from moving.
Without these attachments (which is the case in Smile Direct), the teeth are free to move, which leads to improper and unpredictable teeth movements. Moreover, some teeth require attachments to be able to move, in such a situation wearing only aligners will not help in moving those teeth at all.
In the case of Invisalign, however, you continuously visit the dentist who checks the progress of your teeth movements and would be able to help advise alternative treatments if progress gets slow. Similarly, you have the option to go for a faster treatment through acceleration techniques such as Propel TM
Invisalign Over Smile Direct Club
Due to the continuous dentist visits throughout the treatment, users of Invisalign get regular check-ups in the process. If anything seems wrong, such as a tooth not moving properly or moving out of the bone, or any kind of hint of possible gum disease, the Orthodontist will be swift in providing a proper diagnosis. Once diagnosed, any such problem or complication is easily handled because usually such problems are caught as soon as they start to show. This is not true in Smile Direct because the users of the product do not visit a dentist on a regular basis. Any kind of problem that arises during the treatment might not be diagnosed early enough for it to be solved easily.
Optimization and Impression Taking
One of the key things in which Smile Direct fails is impression taking, usually, a 3D scan is taken in a SmileShop and if that isn’t convenient then a DIY home kit is provided by Smile Direct. The problem with this is although Invisalign uses 3D Scan and Moulds too, the impression in Invisalign is usually taken multiple times to ensure that the aligners are made properly for the teeth they are going to treat. If the impression in Smile Direct is not taken correctly (which is usually the case), it may cause the treatment to be ineffective or worse it may lead to complications of the gums and the jaws.
